A whole bevy of new and exciting things happened in the technology department over the summer here at SPX. One that helps our students be better prepared to collaborate in the digital world is the introductions of Chromebooks.
A Chromebook is essentially a laptop that runs the Google Chrome browser as the operating system. As such it does NOT run traditional programs like a Windows machine does. It runs apps. So instead of using Microsoft Office, our students and teachers are using Google Apps For Education(GAFE). .
One of the main advantages of GAFE is the integration it is already seeing in our colleges and universities. Once our students leave Pius they will be prepared to create and share documents, sheets, and presentations through GAFE.
We have ten Classrooms that have a cart of 25 chromebooks each for student use during the class period. Students can participate in Google Classroom where they can create and share documents, complete assignments, participate in online discussions, and collaborate with each other and their teachers!
We are still going through some growing pains implementing these devices into our varied curriculums. Please encourage your students to exercise patience during this process as I truly believe the rewards will be well worth the effort!
