Athletics Year-end Wrap-up

Sartan Girls Golf took the Class 5A State Championship with a 23-shot victory at Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs. In its first-ever championship season, the team put up a season record of nine tournament wins, twice placed as runners-up, and were District 5-5A champs. Earning All-State honors are Ashlee Garrett and Cindy Herrera and named All-District are Ashlee Garrett, Kori Tellez, Sarah Brown and Jordan Martindale.




SPX golfer Aidan Thomas (left) is the individual Boys Golf 5A State Champion with an 8-shot victory. He shot a 4-under 68 on the tournament’s second day and finished at 5-under to win it.

Track and Field

SPX Track and Field brought home four individual state championships from the 2018 5A State Meet: Ava Gervais won the triple jump with a jump of 36-06.50, Arianna Martinez won her fourth straight high jump state championship at 5’4”, and Haley Rizek won the 300 meter hurdles and javelin. Rizek also broke a state record among all classes during her preliminary 100 meter hurdle run at 14.39 seconds. A fall on the final hurdle in the finals left her with a fourth place finish in that race. The girls team placed fourth in the 4x400 meter relay and earned an overall team ranking of fourth in the state meet. The boys team placed four times at the state competition: Isaiah Griffin placed sixth in the 100 meter dash, Nikulas Skipp placed sixth in high jump, senior Matthew Lobato placed seventh in triple jump, and the boys team placed sixth in the 1600 sprint medley.


Track and Field

The SPX Dorados Dance Team was named the 5A State Runner Up at the NMAA Spirit State Championship. This is the second year in a row that the Dorados have brought home the red trophy. Also, at the Heart of Gold Competition the team won first place in Varsity Pom and the Grand Champion award for having the highest score in the entire competition.

At the 2018 NMAA 5A State Wrestling Tournament junior Steven Sanchez, sophomore Diego Pavia and sophomore Matthew Sanchez each placing second in their respective weight classes. Coach Damacio Page was awarded District 5-5A Coach of the Year Award. At the 5-5A District Tournament, Diego Pavia and Steven Sanchez placed first and Teddy Coyle, Christian Solis and Robbie Espat placed third.



The St. Pius X Baseball Team beat Deming 12-2 to reach the semifinal game of the Class 5A State Baseball Championship, where they fell 9-7 to eventual state champion Farmington. The team ended ranked third in the state with a 19-10 overall record and a district record of 7-1. Named First Team All-District are Mason Ashcraft, Josh Lackner, Jake McCoy, Ryan McGaha, Grant Smith and Hayden Walker; Second Team All-District Austin Jaramillo and Nate Sanchez; and Honorable Mention Mike Statzula and Brayden Payton.


Girls Basketball beat the Roswell Coyotes in the first round of the NMAA 5A State Tournament by a score of 54-36. The team lost in the quarterfinals in the Pit to Kirtland Central 46-42. The Sartans finished the year with an overall record of 19- 9 and a district record of 6-4. Taylor Reed was a First Team All-District selection and was selected to play in the 5A/6A North/South basketball game in June. Katrina Kelley and Maya Trujillo were Second Team All-District selections.


Girls Basketball

Boys Basketball beat Gallup in the first round of the NMAA 5A State Tournament 58-47. The Sartas returned to the Pit for the first time in three years for the quarterfinal game, but lost to Espanola Valley 61-41. The team finished with a 16-11 overall record and a district record of 4-4. Players named All-District were Daniel Vigil, Matthew Gonzalez and Nick Garcia.


Sartan Girls Tennis finished third in district with a record of 8-3. A 4-seed in the state tournament, the team lost in the quarter finals to Los Alamos 5-4. Alexis Acosta and Christine Bui finished third in district in doubles and fourth in the state tournament. Boys Tennis also finished third in district with a 6-6 record. They won a first round at state, defeating Goddard 5-4. They lost in the quarterfinals to Albuquerque Academy.



SPX Cheer placed 6th at the NMAA 5A Spirit State Championship. In a very competitive 5A category, the girls were able to pull up two spots from the first day of competition to place 6th in state. The team also earned third pace awards at the SXW Competition and the Cleveland Challenge.

Swim Team

St. Pius X Boys Swimming placed second at the Santa Fe Prep Griffin Invite and fourth at the district meet this year. Girls Swimming placed second at the Bill Hudson Memorial Invitational in Los Alamos and seventh at the district meet.



Sartan Softball ended the year with an overall record of 4-23 and a district record of 1-7.

Volleyball Overall 20-3 District 8-0. St. Pius X Volleyball place 2nd in the 5A New Mexico State Volleyball Championships. The team had a great season winning 20 games and losing 3. The team also won Regular Season District Champions and District Tournament Champions. We had 7 Varsity athletes earn All-Metro honors, 8 earning All-District honors, and 6 earning All-State honors. Nicole Peery was named District Player of the Year.
