Jacqueline Pinon Cross CountryPinon school portraitJacqueline Pinon placed 3rd in the William Jessup Warrior Invitational XC 5K. The race, which took place in Rocklin, California on October 21st, fields primarily university teams. Pinon entered as an individual, unattached athlete and raced against teams from Southern Oregon, College of Idaho, Oregon Tech, Northwest University, Westmont, Sierra Nevada College, and William Jessup University.

Pinon’s time of 17.35.3 not only placed high at the annual Warrior invitational, but also in the all-time course records at the Johnson-Springview Park course. By comparing the course’s 2016 women’s records with the 2017 invitational results, Pinon should be 8th on the All-Time Course Records.

Not surprisingly, when Pinon and the SPX XC team competed against high school athletes, they did well. At the final race of the season, the state championship, on November 4th in Rio Rancho, Pinon won individual state champion by 44 seconds, her time was 18:42. The team results were 11th for girls and 9th for boys. The boys were led by Bryan Martinez (12) in 20th with a time of 18:03. There is one area where Pinon follows, and that is the strong SPX XC tradition created by previous athletes, such as Kelli Reagan.

Reagan, class of 2014, also won the XC state championship, in 2013. She was a member of the All-State XC team from 2012-2013, recipient of the Gatorade New Mexico Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year Award, and ran on the first-place 1600m medley relay state championship team in 2013. Recently, the Yale senior economics major was voted women’s XC team captain for the 2017 season.
