This fall semester, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the 16,000 semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Nearly 1.6 million juniors began the competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Daniel Stotzer, Saint Pius X senior, was one of the 16,000 selected. As a semifinalist, he represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

Daniel, son of Reinhard and Ellen Stotzer, will continue in the program for a finalist position. Finalists can then compete for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, totaling over $32 million. Nearly 90 percent of semifinalist earn a finalist position, of which half are awarded the Merit Scholar title.

When asked how Saint Pius X prepared him for the scholarship program, Stotzer said, the school’s challenging curriculum and its administration of practice tests helped prepare him.

The National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April 2018.
