Academic Decathlon team medals at NationalsIn March 2018, the Saint Pius X Academic Decathlon Team won its 17th State Championship! Seniors Carson Stock and Bryan Martinez, along with junior Dominic DeBlassie were the top three individual competitors. As State Champions, Pius represented New Mexico at the National Finals, held this year in Frisco, Texas in April.

The top award-winners at Nationals were:

Varsity Division
Dominic DeBlassie (11): National Silver Medal in Science, 7th place in History, 8th place in Math

Scholastic Division
Bryan Martinez (12): National Silver Medal in Interview, 6th place in Science
Carson Stock (12): National Bronze Medal in Interview
Jasmine Day (12): Team MVP Scholarship Winner, 8th place in Essay, 9th place in Art

Honors Division
Kayla Moehn (11): Scholarship Winner for Overall Score, 4th place in Speech, 6th place in Math, 6th place in Science
Margaret Carpenter (12): 8th place in Math, 10th place in Interview

Cecilia Pareja (11) and Caitlin Vigil (12) were also members of the State Championship Team that advanced to Nationals.

The Academic Decathlon features ten events: science, math, economics, history, literature, art, music, speech, essay, and interview. Students compete in each of the ten events, developing numerous aspects of their knowledge and skills in the hopes of creating well-rounded leaders for the future.

The theme for this year was Sub-Saharan Africa. Art, music, literature, and history all focused on this region of the world, and special sections of economics and science also focused on topics linked to this area.
