The defending State Champion Saint Pius X Academic Decathlon Team got off to a terrific start in the 2015-2016 season in the first round of competitions, often referred to as the “Local Competition” held December 9. All twenty-five Saint Pius X students involved in Academic Decathlon took tests in Art, Economics, History, Literature, Math, Music, and Science via the internet, competing against other teams in New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington. The results were not released until the start of the new year 2016.
The highest scoring team among all four states combined was Saint Pius X Team 1, and the second-highest scoring team was Saint Pius X Team 2! This is an amazing result, and hopefully an indication that Saint Pius X has a good chance to earn a trip to the National Finals again this April.
Students on the winning two teams are the following:
SAINT PIUS X ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM 1
Sam Apodaca Marena Trujillo
SAINT PIUS X ACADEMIC DECATHLON TEAM 2
Matthew Torres Bryan Martinez
In January, the starting team for Saint Pius X must be cut down to twelve members. In February, a final roster of only nine students is allowed for the State Championship competition.
Special thanks to Assistant Principal Barbara Ducaj and assistant coach Jonathan Ball for helping to proctor the first round tests.
Other Saint Pius X competitors included Jacob Carpenter, Mark Perea, Karina Scheller, Karl Schneller, Nikalus Skipp, Izaiah Sedillo, Christopher Padilla, and Matthew Lobato, who also scored well. Saint Pius X did not have enough students in the correct student categories to field a third full team with these students and order to compare their scores to other teams in the four-state region.
Congratulations to all Saint Pius X participants and to head coach James Penn on a great start to this year’s competitions! Good luck at Regionals and State!
