March News From the Language Department

On March 5, the UNM Language Expo was held. It is a chance for all SPX language students to learn about other cultures and languages. It is also a great opportunity to compete against other students from around the state in a variety of areas such as poster creation, chalk art, non-English haiku and team trivia. This annual extravaganza is always such a great event in the modern language calendar. The event is held in and around Ortega Hall at UNM.

Also, on Friday March 18, upper level Spanish students will be attending a theater adaptation of the motion picture “Real Women Have Curves” at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. It is a great opportunity to view cultural topics addressed in a dramatic-fiction setting. Attendees will also be eating at local establishments, using their language skills to order and converse at lunch discussing their opinions and critiques of the play presentation.

Wondering why your children should take French at SPX next year? The reasons are plenty! In addition to learning to speak a beautiful, romantic language, French is your S.A.T connection (since about 30% of all English words are derived from French). French also opens doors to the world and amazing jobs, including jobs with the U.S government. Why? Because the world speaks French! French, along with English, is a truly global language - over 200 million people in 40+ countries on every continent speak French. French is the language spoken by the US largest trading partner, Canada. In the US alone, over 2 million French natives use French daily from New York City to Miami to Los Angeles, and some 2,400 French companies in the US employ about 650,000 Americans. So perhaps with French, one day, you will be able to find your future dream job.

Also, every year in the spring, the most driven, enthusiastic French students at SPX take the National French Contest and compete both within the state and nationally from French I to French IV. This national test is taken by no less than 100,000 students around the U.S and 400 to 500 students in the state, so the competition is fierce. Every year, Sartan French students are state champions in one or more levels of French and have continually ranked in the top 10 in the state and in the nation with this national test. So sign up for French next year, you will LOVE it! We offer French I to French IV classes, including honors classes, all taught by a native French speaker.
