Congratulations to all of our fall athletes and coaches, especially Coach David Sullivan, Jr. and the girls’ soccer team for their third straight championship and the first for David as head coach. In addition, coach Jeanne Fairchild and the volleyball team made it to the semi-final round in the state playoffs and were featured this season on the Channel 4 KOB Friday night New Mexico Game-Day Show with host J.P. Murrieta. The football team and Coach San Juan Mendoza had an exceptional 10-2 season and made it to the quarter-finals. Our girls’ cross country team and Coach Jeff Turcotte brought home a third-place state trophy this year. Also thanks to those team parents and everyone who volunteered throughout the season to support their teams.
The NMAA has formed new athletic districts starting in the 2016/2017 season, and St. Pius X will be in District 5-5A which will include Belen, Grants, Los Lunas, and Valencia. Unfortunately, our traditional school rival, the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, will no longer be in our district. Note, that for all private schools, the NMAA applies a 1.3 multiplier against the student population to determine the specific district classification which is 5A for SPX.
For any team that achieves 100% membership in the Athletic Boosters Club for that season, we double the distribution of funds designated to that team. For the fall sports, Coach Gina Rightely and the Dorados dance team had 100% participation. As a result, the dance team will receive a $1,225 distribution from the Athletic Boosters Club. Booster Club participation in the other fall sports was 50% for cheer, 67% for football, 40% for boys’ soccer, 26% for girls’ soccer, 68% for volleyball and 14% for cross-country. The Athletic Boosters Club will distribute almost $4,000 to our fall sports teams thanks to your memberships this year.
Please support our winter sport athletes which includes boy’s and girls’ basketball, wrestling, swimming, diving, dance, cheer, and hockey. The Athletic Boosters Club will be selling memberships at the November 24th girls’ basketball game and December 1st boys’ basketball game. The challenge date for 100% Booster Club membership for winter sports is January 15th so please join to support your athletes.
