Athletic Review: September 16-21

Cross Country:

The Sartan Cross Country team took part in the Annual Bread Run at Zuni Pueblo, competing in a quad meet alongside Albuquerque Academy, Santa Fe, and host Zuni. In a highly competitive atmosphere, the Sartans finished second in all four races, trailing only the top-ranked Albuquerque Academy.

  • Varsity Girls were led by senior Brooke Kelly, who secured an impressive 3rd place finish.
  • Varsity Boys saw senior Max Lopez cross the line in 8th place.
  • JV Girls had senior Jessie Castro leading the way with an 11th place finish.
  • JV Boys were paced by 8th grader Levi Lopez, who finished in 5th place.

The Sartans will take a break this week and return to action at the Metro Championships on October 5.

Football: 

The Sartans (2-1 overall) junior varsity football team suffered their first loss of the season last Monday, falling 40-22 to 6A West Mesa. Despite the setback, the Sartans JV squad had previously notched impressive wins against Valley (38-22) and Hope Christian (48-6), showing strong potential as they move forward in the season.

Sartans C-Team football fell on Monday to Valley High School. 

Golf:

 

The middle school golf team hosted a tournament for 6th-8th graders at Los Altos Golf Course on Thursday, September 19th, competing against teams from across Albuquerque.

Soccer (Boys):

The Sartan varsity boys soccer team returned from Maryland and secured two impressive victories last week. On Tuesday, they defeated Albuquerque Academy 2-0 at home on Ben Rios Field. Junior Didier Herrera and sophomore Nico Reyes each found the back of the net, with assists from senior Tim Dyson and junior Matro Certain.

The momentum continued on Thursday with a road win over Los Alamos, where senior Julian Lovato scored the game’s lone goal. The Sartans now hold a 7-3 overall record as they gear up for district play, starting on Tuesday, September 24th, against Belen.

C-team Boys soccer also secured a win over Cleveland on Thursday afternoon. 

Our St. Pius X Sartans co-ed middle school soccer team secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bosque last week.

Soccer (Girls):

The Sartan girls soccer team faced tough competition last week, falling in three close matches. They were defeated 2-0 by Albuquerque Academy, 1-0 by Los Alamos, and 2-1 by Albuquerque High. Now standing at 3-6 on the season, the Sartans will look to bounce back as they enter district play. They face the 8-2 Belen Eagles on the road this Tuesday, September 24th.

Volleyball:

The Sartan varsity volleyball team delivered an exhilarating performance in their only game last week, overcoming the Hope Christian Huskies in a nail-biting five-set match. In what can only be described as a display of resilience and determination, the Sartans mounted a remarkable comeback in the 4th set. Trailing 20-8, they dug deep and rallied to win the set 25-23, stunning the Huskies and shifting the momentum in their favor.

With confidence high and teamwork on full display, the Sartans carried their energy into the decisive 5th set. They played with focus and precision, cruising to a commanding 15-7 victory and sealing the match. The win was a testament to their perseverance and team spirit, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.

Middle School Volleyball

The success extended beyond varsity, as all five middle school volleyball teams also emerged victorious. The 8th and 7th Grade Black teams defeated Los Alamos, while the 6th and 7th Grade Gold teams triumphed over Bosque. The 6th Grade Black team continued the winning streak with a victory over Sandia Prep.

Last Wednesday, the 6th and 7th Grade Black teams kept their momentum going, both earning wins against Cottonwood in their respective matches. The Sartans’ volleyball program is riding a wave of success, with strong performances across all levels.

The 8th grade team capped off a successful week with an impressive performance at the Rio Rancho tournament over the weekend, where they emerged as champions! Their strong play throughout the weekend secured them the tournament title, adding to an already stellar season for the team.
