Athletic Review: October 14-19

On Tuesday, October 15, The C-Team Volleyball also played at home, defeating Valencia in an intense matchup, while the 8th Grade Volleyball team secured a victory on the road against Valencia. The JV Volleyball wrapped up the day with wins against Valencia, maintaining their strong form heading into the latter part of the season.

The action continued on Wednesday, October 16, as the JV Boys Soccer team fought hard but lost a close 2-1 game against Albuquerque Academy. The 8th Grade Volleyball team, however, celebrated another win on the road, this time at West Las Vegas. In soccer, the C-Team Boys rebounded with a 3-1 victory over Academy.

Thursday, October 17, saw both soccer teams shine. The JV Boys Soccer team earned a 4-0 shutout win over Valencia at home, capping off an excellent day for Sartan soccer.

On Friday, October 18, St. Pius X hosted the inaugural NMAA Middle School Track Meet, bringing together young athletes for an exciting competition.

Finally, Saturday, October 19, The Baseball Fall Ball team hosted a doubleheader against Manzano, continuing their fall campaign with back-to-back games. To close out the week, the JV Boys Soccer team triumphed on the road against Artesia.

Cross Country

 

The St. Pius X cross country team competed in the prestigious Academy Extravaganza, facing a highly competitive field. The boys' team secured an impressive 3rd place finish, led by standout senior Liam Chavez, who placed 7th individually. On the girls' side, senior Brooke Kelly led the way with an 8th-place finish, helping the team earn 7th overall. Both teams demonstrated strong performances in a challenging event.

St. Pius X Rolls Past Chaparral, Alone in First Place in District 2-4A

The St. Pius X Sartans continued their dominant district run with a resounding 41-6 victory over the Chaparral Lobos on Friday night, moving to 6-2 overall and taking sole possession of first place in District 2-4A with a 4-0 record.

The Sartans wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with sophomore quarterback Isaiah Carpenter leading a quick, efficient opening drive that culminated in a touchdown. Carpenter was outstanding throughout the game, completing 20 of 35 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Sartans control the pace from start to finish.

In the second quarter, running back Hershul Olloway Jr. broke through for a 47-yard touchdown run, giving St. Pius a 14-0 lead. Olloway, who finished with 128 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns, showcased his versatility as both a powerful runner and a key offensive contributor. Despite a late Chaparral touchdown, the Sartans responded swiftly, adding another score before halftime to go up 21-6.

The second half was all Sartans, as Carpenter found his top target, Logan Underwood, for two touchdown passes, including a 67-yard bomb that put the game out of reach. Underwood had a standout performance, hauling in seven catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Cayl Cox-Liggins also contributed with two touchdown receptions, finishing with eight catches for 126 yards.

On the defensive side, the Sartans were relentless, holding Chaparral to just 43 plays and 11 first downs, while racking up six sacks, led by standout defensive linemen Michael Deller and Kolbe Padilla. Deller tallied three sacks and 11 tackles, while Padilla added another three sacks and an interception, putting constant pressure on the Chaparral offense.

St. Pius dominated in all phases of the game, outgaining Chaparral 488 to 195 in total yards. They executed well on special teams, with senior kicker T.homasValenzuela converting five of six extra points. The defense also forced multiple turnovers, including a key fumble recovery by Collin Foster in the third quarter that halted any momentum Chaparral was trying to build.

With this victory, St. Pius X improves to 6-2 overall and remains undefeated in district play at 4-0. Their next challenge will come next week as they look to maintain their grip on the district title and continue their march toward the playoffs.

The St. Pius X Sartans boys varsity soccer team continues to dominate, now standing at 15-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in District 2-4A. Their recent victories include a 17-1 thrashing of Grants, a 6-0 shutout over Valencia, and a 7-0 out-of-district win against Artesia. 

 

In the match against Grants, standout performances came from Ethan Wright (3 goals, 1 assist), Nico Reyes (5 goals, 1 assist), Anthony Gustamantes (1 goal, 2 assists), Mateo Certain (2 goals, 2 assists), Lance Yarbrough (4 assists), Diego Herrera (1 goal, 3 assists), and Tim Dyson (1 goal, 1 assist). 

 

Against Valencia, contributions came from Mateo Certain (2 goals, 1 assist), Logan Zerbe (1 goal, 1 assist), Anthony Gustamantes (1 goal, 1 assist), Ethan Wright (1 goal, 1 assist), and Kenneth Calderon (1 goal, 1 assist). 

 

In their commanding 7-0 win over Artesia, Noah Devany led with 2 goals and 1 assist, with additional goals and assists coming from Landon Mileshosky (1 goal), Konnor Bogart (1 goal), Ethan Wright (1 goal), and Kenneth Calderon (1 goal, 1 assist). The Sartans' impressive all-around team effort keeps them firmly in control of the district.

 

SOCCER (GIRLS)

 

The St. Pius X Sartans girls varsity soccer team had an impressive week, securing two district wins with a dominant 10-0 victory over Grants and a 2-0 shutout against Valencia. These wins elevate their overall record to 10-7 and maintain their perfect 7-0 mark in District 5-4A. 

Against Grants, standout contributions came from Audrey Mileshosky (2 goals, 4 assists), Amara Torres (2 goals), Maddilyn Garcia (2 goals, 2 assists), Zia Valdez (1 goal), Aubrey Rodela (1 assist), Izabella Cotinola (1 goal), and Carina Suarez (2 goals, 3 assists). 

 

In the Valencia match, key players included Audrey Mileshosky (1 goal), Aubrey Rodela (2 assists), Maddilyn Garcia (2 goals), and Vanessa Cichy (2 assists). The Sartans continue to showcase teamwork and skill, remaining undefeated in district play.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The St. Pius X volleyball team had an outstanding week, securing two victories. They swept Valencia 3-0 in District 5-4A play and followed up with a 3-1 win against rival Albuquerque Academy in a non-district match, both at home. These wins improved the Sartans' record to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in District 5-4A.
