Sartan Athletics Recap: Week of January 20th-26th, 2025
This week was packed with incredible performances from our Sartan athletes, including dominant basketball wins, strong showings in wrestling, and exciting middle school matchups. Here’s a look at the highlights!
High School Athletics
Boys Basketball
The varsity boys started District 5-4A play strong, going 2-0 last week. On Tuesday, they defeated the Belen Eagles 73-56, pulling away in the second half after a closely contested first quarter. Friday’s game against the Grants Pirates was a nail-biter, with the Sartans rallying in the fourth quarter to secure a 60-59 victory. The team now stands at 14-5 overall and 2-0 in district play.
- Up Next: The Sartans travel to Valencia (Los Lunas) this week for another district matchup.
Junior Varsity: Improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in district with wins over Belen (71-51) and Grants (58-49).
C-Team: Split their games, beating Belen 60-36 and falling to Grants 37-30, now 7-2 overall and 1-1 in district play.
Girls Basketball
The varsity girls also began district play undefeated with two road wins. They secured a 46-22 victory over Belen and followed it up with a hard-fought 51-40 win over Grants. The team’s overall record now stands at 12-6, with a 2-0 district record.
- Junior Varsity: The JV team mirrored the varsity success, defeating Belen 55-36 and Grants 42-32, improving to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in district play.
Swimming
The Sartan swim team traveled to Hobbs and Santa Fe Prep for meets last week. Results from both have not been submitted. ([email protected])
Wrestling
The St. Pius X wrestling team hosted over 50 teams at the 2025 Sartan Scuffle at the Rio Rancho Events Center. Both boys and girls teams had impressive performances.

Middle School Athletics
Basketball
On Wednesday, the 6th and 7th-grade Black and Gold teams earned wins at Santa Fe Prep, with scores of 36-24 (Gold) and 32-30 in overtime (Black).
On Friday, all three teams—Black, Gold, and White—traveled to Albuquerque Academy. Black and Gold (33-11) teams secured victories, while the White team narrowly fell in a close battle.
