High School
Boys Basketball
The boys basketball team is now 17-5 overall and 5-0 in District 5-4A after going 2-0 in district play last week. The Sartans defeated Highland 53-47 and Belen 45-44, extending their winning streak to five games. Next up is a district road game at Grants on Tuesday. The JV boys are now 8-9 overall after dropping a couple of tough games last week to Highland and Belen. The C-team holds a 10-5 record after a win over Highland and a close loss on the road to Belen.
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball team improved to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in District 5-4A after winning both of their district games last week. The Sartans beat Highland 57-47 and edged out Belen 37-33 at home. They will host Grants on Tuesday night.
Powerlifting
The powerlifting team did not have any competitions last week.
Swimming
The swimming team competed at Albuquerque Academy on Saturday, though results were not submitted at the time of this report.
Wrestling
The wrestling team had an exciting weekend at the NMAA Regional Championships. Zia Budagher became the first two-time NMAA Women’s Regional Champion in St. Pius X history. The Sartans took eight athletes to regionals, with five qualifying for the NMAA State Championships.
Qualified state participants include Zia Budagher (Champion), Isabella Vallejos (4th place), Claudia Aragon (6th place), Abigail Rael (Wild Card), and Avi Phlieger (Wild Card).
The boys wrestling team also competed in the Freshman/Sophomore Invite at Rio Rancho. Standout performances included first-place finishes by Matthew Longdon and Zachary Katz, while Lance Yarbrough and Ethan Machtinger each earned second-place finishes. The future looks bright for this young group of athletes.
Middle School
Boys Basketball
In middle school boys basketball, the teams competed hard throughout the week. On Monday, both the white and black teams picked up wins. The white team defeated Cottonwood Classical, and the black team beat Albuquerque Academy. The gold team fell to Albuquerque Academy. On Wednesday, the Sartans faced tough competition, with the white team falling to Santa Fe Prep and the black and gold teams losing to Sandia Prep.
Swim Team
The middle school swim team competed at Albuquerque Academy on February 7. Results were not available at the time of release.
Activities
One of our middle school students, Xavier Ortega, continues to impress in archery competitions. On February 2, he took 1st place in the U15 Fixed Pin Men’s Division at the 2025 New Mexico State Indoor Championship. During the February 7–9 USA Archery JOAD Nationals, Xavier placed 3rd regionally and 12th nationally. His next big competition will be March 5–9, when he competes in Las Vegas.
