St. Pius X Athletics Recap: March 17–22

High School

Baseball
The Sartans varsity baseball team is riding a two-game win streak following victories over Albuquerque Academy and Manzano. St. Pius X edged Academy in a tight 3-2 contest, led by Zain Unis (Class of 2026) with two hits, one run scored, and a stolen base. Diego Trujillo (2027) delivered a triple and two RBIs, while Jack Mulville (2025) chipped in with an RBI double. Freshman pitcher Hunter Jiron (2028) struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings to help secure the win.

Over the weekend, the Sartans kept the momentum going with a 9-4 win over Manzano. Mulville paced the offense with three hits, two RBIs, and three runs. Christopher Aguilar (2027), Jiron, Trujillo, Kaiden Swanson (2026), and Unis also scored, with Unis crossing home twice. Jacob Madrid (2025) earned the win on the mound, tossing five innings and striking out three. The Sartans improve to 5-7 on the season and now head to the Rio Rancho Tournament, where they will face Rio Grande on March 24, Los Lunas on March 25, and Carlsbad on March 27.

 

Golf
At the SPX Golf Spring Opener on March 12, the Sartans showed strength across the board. The boys’ team earned a second-place finish behind Volcano Vista, with Mulville and Madrid tying for second individually. Unis added a remarkable moment of his own with a double eagle—an exceptionally rare accomplishment in the sport.

The girls’ team also placed second overall, finishing just behind Los Alamos. Olivia Long and Parker Velarde-Wilson led the way with third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

Softball
The varsity softball team is coming off a high-scoring 19-9 victory over Los Alamos. Now sitting at 5-9 on the season, the Sartans had several players contribute at the plate. Lilee Zarate (2027) recorded three hits and scored three runs. Isabella Caba (2026) added three hits and two runs, while Davianna Romero (2026) finished with two hits and two runs. Jordyn Caintic (2027) had two hits and three runs scored. Freshman Diamor Ibarra-Villegas (2029), Dominique Morett (2027), and Aubri Hooee (2027) all added key hits and multiple runs. Amari Jaramillo (2027) chipped in with a hit and one run. The Sartans return home on March 26 to host Albuquerque High at 4 p.m.

 

Track & Field
The St. Pius X track and field team turned in a strong showing at the SPX Spring Opener held at Los Altos on March 12. The boys’ team finished second overall, just behind defending state champion Volcano Vista. Jax Mulville and Jacob Madrid tied for second place in individual competition, while Zain Unis impressed with a rare double eagle—a feat with odds of one in six million.

On the girls’ side, the Sartans placed second behind Los Alamos. Olivia Long and Parker Velarde-Wilson were the top finishers, placing third and fourth, respectively.

Over the weekend, senior Bryan Thomas (2025) delivered a record-breaking performance at the Chandler Rotary Invitational in Arizona, setting two new school records. Thomas ran the 200-meter dash in 21.92 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 47.97 seconds, marking a major highlight for the track program.

 

More Activities & Sports in Action
The St. Pius X cheer team competed in the state tournament on Friday, March 21, earning a strong sixth-place finish with a total score of 146.57 points.

Both the boys’ and girls’ water polo teams participated in an event at West Mesa Aquatic Center, while the powerlifting team was in action at Bernalillo.
