Baseball
The St. Pius X varsity baseball team continued its dominant run in District 5-4A, securing back-to-back wins last week to improve to 12-11 overall and a perfect 5-0 in district play.
On Tuesday, the Sartans took down Highland with an explosive 17-5 win, scoring in five of seven innings and racking up 10 hits as a team. Junior Darryk Olivares went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with three runs scored and a home run, while senior Caiden Bischoff added two hits and an RBI. Jacob Madrid and Ashton Warren each contributed home runs of their own, and Kaiden Swanson chipped in with a multi-hit performance and two RBIs. On the mound, sophomore Brennan Craver was lights out in relief, striking out five and allowing no hits in two innings of work.
The momentum carried into Friday’s matchup with Belen, where the Sartans earned a 9-2 victory, collecting 11 hits and hitting three home runs as a team. Sophomore Joaquin Aragon led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing, driving in five runs, including two home runs. Madrid stayed hot, going 3-for-5 with a homer of his own and two RBIs. Solid contributions from Diego Trujillo, Michael Deller, and Kaiden Swanson helped power the offense, while the Sartans’ pitching staff kept Belen off the board after the first inning.
Softball
The St. Pius X varsity softball team continued its dominance in District 5-4A, earning two more victories last week to improve to 10-12 overall and a perfect 5-0 in district play.
On Monday, April 15, the Sartans cruised past Highland with a commanding 18-0 win, ending the game in just three innings. The offense erupted for eight hits and 11 RBIs, with standout performances across the board. Sophomore Aubri Hooee went 2-for-3 with two runs, three RBIs, and two doubles, while Jordan Chavez finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs. Eighth grader Diamor Ibarra-Villegas added three runs and a hit, and Lilee Zarate drove in three runs on one hit. Hooee also dominated in the circle, throwing a no-hitter over three innings, striking out four and walking two.
The following day, St. Pius X pulled off a thrilling 5-4 comeback win against Belen, scoring five unanswered runs in the final three innings. Hooee and Daniella Romero each recorded 2-for-3 performances, with Romero driving in a key run. Ibarra-Villegas continued her strong week with another two-hit game and two runs scored. Grace Grady and Sophia Trujillo added timely hits to help complete the comeback. Zarate earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game and allowing just two earned runs on five hits, while striking out three.
Tennis
The Girls Varsity Tennis Team continues their strong season with an impressive 8-1 win over district rival Grants High School. They followed up with a hard-fought 5-4 victory against Highland on April 14. The team has now won five of their last six matches.
The Boys Varsity Tennis Team picked up two more wins this week, continuing their strong run in district play. On April 14, the Sartans edged out Highland in a close 5-4 victory. They followed that with a convincing 7-2 road win over Grants High School on April 16.
Track & Field
The St. Pius X Track and Field team with outstanding performances at the West Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, April 12. Competing against 18 schools, the Sartans brought home major hardware, with the boys team earning first place and the girls team finishing second overall.
A total of 49 athletes competed in 18 events, showcasing depth, teamwork, and individual excellence.
Sophomore Hershul Olloway dominated the sprints, capturing titles in the 100m, 200m, and 400m, and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team. On the girls side, Sophomore Annabella Munoz had a standout meet, winning both the 100m and 200m, while also contributing to two victorious relay teams.
